For why this is wrong, let’s look at a really simple example: you have 20 students and 2 teachers. Each teacher has 10 students. If you cut staffing 50% (1 teacher), the remaining teacher’s load doesn’t increase 50% (5 students). It increases 100%.

Similarly, if you have 50 teachers with 40 students each, you could cut to 40 teachers who would have 50 students each. That’s an increase of 25%.
